Fugitive Slaves and the Underground Railroad: Lesson Overview

Content Objectives:

Students will be able to:

  1. Understand slave laws in Pennsylvania in the antebellum period and assess their implications for the free black, slave, and general populations of Philadelphia.
  2. Identify important terms and key figures in Pennsylvania’s Underground Railroad.
  3. Assess the operations of the Vigilant Committee and compare its role to that of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society.

Teaching Time: Two 50 minute periods
